Meet Dr. Gina
Hopkins-Calligan

Founder, MD.

Dr. Gina Hopkins-Calligan

Most neurologists treat epilepsy. Dr. Gina Hopkins-Calligan has focused her entire career on it.

Dr. Gina Hopkins-Calligan is a board-certified neurologist and epileptologist with a deep commitment to delivering expert, compassionate seizure care to the communities of Arizona. She founded Sonoran Epilepsy Center to fill a critical gap in subspecialty neurology access across the Valley.

Dr. Hopkins-Calligan earned her medical degree in 2012 from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine before going on to complete a neurology residency in 2016 and epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology fellowship in 2018, both at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center/Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. Before launching Sonoran Epilepsy Center, Dr. Hopkins-Calligan spent six years at the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center in Phoenix, where she provided comprehensive neurological care to veterans—an experience that sharpened her clinical expertise and deepened her dedication to patient-centered medicine. There she also served as Deputy Chief of Neurology, participated in clinical research, and was active in teaching medical students and residents.

Her clinical focus encompasses the full spectrum of epilepsy care: from first-seizure evaluations and EEG interpretation to complex medical management and coordination with surgical teams for refractory cases. Dr. Hopkins-Calligan has a particular interest in caring for women with epilepsy and related conditions, and is an active member of the American Epilepsy Society. She is passionate about empowering patients and families with the knowledge and tools to live fully with epilepsy.

Outside of medicine, she enjoys spending time with her husband and children in Phoenix. She is an avid runner and was the overall winner of the 2017 Epilepsy Foundation of Arizona 5k.

WHY CHOOSE SONORAN EPILEPSY?

Understanding Your Diagnosis Changes Everything.

At Sonoran Epilepsy, patient education is not an afterthought, it’s part of the treatment. Many patients arrive having been told they have a “seizure disorder” and leave understanding exactly what epilepsy is, what’s driving their seizures, and what their options are. That knowledge is not incidental. It is one of the most effective tools against the fear and stigma that may often follow a diagnosis.
